With crystal-clear waters, breathtaking views and accessible trails, this mountain lake is well worth a visit. In this article, find out everything you need to know to plan your trip to Lac Rond!
Key points to remember:
. Lac Rond is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of around 2,300 m in the Hautes-Alpes, near the Clarée Valley and Névache.
. The hike is suitable for intermediate walkers: 8 to 10 km round trip, 400 to 600 m elevation gain, 3 to 4 hours’ walking.
. The ideal time to visit is from mid-June to late September, with July being the best time (alpine pastures in bloom, mild weather).
. Once there, the scenery is above all a feast for the eyes: turquoise waters, a 360° panorama of the peaks, and the chance to spot marmots, chamois and alpine flora.
. Swimming is not really an option (the water is rarely above 15 °C) and standard mountain precautions are essential: walking boots, plenty of water, an early start, and layered clothing.
What exactly is Lac Rond?
Lac Rond is a high-altitude lake situated in the French Alps. As its name so aptly suggests, it is distinguished by its distinctly circular shape, characteristic of glacial lakes shaped over millennia by glacial erosion. It sits at an altitude of around 2,300 metres, set against a quintessentially Alpine landscape: lush green meadows in summer, granite rocks and horizons dominated by snow-capped peaks.
This lake is one of those destinations that appeals equally to families and solitary hikers seeking tranquillity. The water is remarkably pure and, depending on the light, takes on hues ranging from emerald green to deep blue. It is a natural spectacle that alone makes the journey worthwhile!
A gem of the Hautes-Alpes
One of the reasons Lac Rond is so appealing is that it forms part of an exceptional mountain range. Situated in the Hautes-Alpes, not far from the Clarée Valley and the Névache area, this lake is part of one of France’s finest hiking regions.
Fans of long-distance hikes will also appreciate its proximity to iconic peaks such as Mont Thabor and the Col de Cerce, which offer spectacular views across the entire mountain range. For hikers wishing to extend their adventure over several days, it is possible to reach other remarkable lakes in the valley, such as Lac Cristol or the Muandes area, by following signposted trails with varying levels of elevation gain.

How do you get to Lac Rond?
Starting point and road access
Lac Rond is usually accessed from the valley, with several possible starting points depending on the walk you choose. The most popular route starts from the village or the car park higher up, which helps to minimise the elevation gain and makes the walk accessible to as many people as possible.
It is advisable to come by car and park in the designated car parks at the start of the summer season. During the peak season (July–August), it is best to arrive early in the morning to secure a space, as this type of trail can get very busy.
The walking trail
The path leading to Lac Rond is signposted and relatively well maintained. The walk involves a moderate climb, making it suitable for intermediate walkers, or even families with children who are used to walking in the mountains.
Some practical details:
. Distance: approximately 8 to 10 km round trip, depending on your chosen starting point
. Elevation gain: around 400 to 600 metres
. Duration: allow between 3 and 4 hours’ walking in total, including breaks
. Difficulty: intermediate level, suitable for regular walkers
The trail passes through a variety of landscapes: coniferous forests at the start of the route, open mountain pastures higher up, then a rocky, open plateau before reaching the lake. Each section offers its own unique experiences and scenery.
When’s the best time to go?
The walk is accessible from mid-June to the end of September (depending on snow conditions). At the start of the season, some sections may still be covered in snow or muddy, so it is advisable to check the condition of the trails before setting off. July remains the ideal time of year: the mountain pastures are in bloom, there is plenty of sunlight and the weather is generally mild.
What is there to see and do at Lac Rond?
Just taking the time to reflect is a great start!
Once you arrive at the lake, the first thing to do is quite simply… to stop and take the time to observe the still water, the reflections of the surrounding peaks, and the marmots scurrying about on the nearby scree… Lac Rond is one of those places that naturally invites you to feel at peace and let go. Settle down on a rock at the water’s edge, get out your packed lunch and enjoy the moment.
La faune et la flore alpine
All along the trail and around the lake, alpine biodiversity is on full display. For nature photography enthusiasts, it is an exceptional playground. You’ll have a good chance of spotting:marmots, easily
. recognised by their distinctive calls;
. chamois or ibex on the rocky slopes;
. remarkable alpine flora: gentians, arnica and alpine anemones.
The view from the heights
The path that runs alongside the lake and climbs gently beyond it offers unobstructed views of the surrounding mountain ranges. On a clear day, the 360-degree panorama is absolutely breathtaking. Bring your binoculars to identify the peaks on the horizon.
Going for a swim: a good or a bad idea?
The water in Lac Rond is cold – very cold. Even in the middle of August, the temperature rarely exceeds 15°C! Some brave souls don’t hesitate to take a dip for the thrill and the story, but prolonged swimming is not recommended. This isn’t a pebble beach; it’s a high-altitude lake: please respect the fragile environment and avoid using sun cream in the water.
Our practical tips before you set off
Before setting off on the trail, here are a few essential tips:
. hiking boots are essential (trainers are not suitable);
. dress in layers: in the mountains, the weather can change quickly, even in summer;
. take plenty of water: allow at least 1.5 litres per person;
. sun cream and sunglasses: UV rays are stronger at altitude than at lower altitudes;
. a map or hiking app: even though the trail is signposted, it’s best to have a digital guide (AllTrails, IGN Rando);
. set off early to avoid the late-afternoon thunderstorms that are common in the mountains during summer.
